Some time ago a German collector drew the attention of the Daft members to a new German pipe maker I had never heard of : Heiner Nonnenbroich. On the carver’s website I found out that he was a piano teacher who had been making around 50 – 70 pipes a year since several years now. On the pipes page I discovered his hand mades with hand cut ebonite bits, in the three finishes, most of them with a 9mm filter chamber.

Not all shapes appealed to me, but since my favourite finish is a ring grain blast and since I am fond of the typical Lars Ivarsson shank, the “Lars” immediately caught my eye. Moreover 125 Euro for a pipe with a hand cut bit seemed more than fair. There was one problem though : the pipe was a 9mm, which I profoundly dislike. So I asked mister Nonnenbroich whether he could make an unremovable adapter that would fit perfectly in the chamber and that wouldn’t leave any gap in the mortise. No prob, he said. A week later the pipe was sitting on my desk.

Having examined and smoked the pipe, I felt satisfied but not entirely. On the one hand, the blast was much more beautiful than I expected : a well defined but not very deep wavy ring grain on the whole surface of the bowl. A typical Danish blast. The pipe was very well drilled, the shank decoration was well executed and after two bowlfuls the taste of the coating was gone. On the other hand, there clearly must have been a misunderstanding because the adaptor for the filter chamber was a removable one. Moreover, though the draw of the pipe was OK, I was convinced it would be improved if the pipe had a 4mm airway in stead of the 3.5mm Heiner had used. There was one thing that really bothered me : for my taste the bit was too thick and the button too obtrusive, while I found the opening to be too narrow.

When I bought the pipe, Heiner Nonnenbroich had explicitely asked to give my honest opinion about his work. That’s exactly what I did and extensively so. I also advised him to talk with Cornelius Maenz about the stem job. Heiner asked me to send the pipe back and promised to do the necessary modifications. One week later he told me he had been experimenting with 4mm drills and he had consulted both with Rainer Barbi and with Cornelius. Evidently a motivated guy !

Yesterday the pipe arrived. The difference is remarkable. The 4mm airway is drilled perfectly well and ends in a well shaped, wide open slot. The fixed adapter with a funneled tenon is fitted exactly to the dimensions of the mortise. Last but not least the bit and button now are thin, unobtrusive and really comfortable, without losing solidity.

Heiner Nonnenbroich has informed me that all the other pipes on his website have undergone similar modifications to those he did on mine.

Since yesterday I have smoked the pipe three times. There’s only one way to describe the smoking properties : excellent ! The draw is easy and really feels natural, it allows a relaxed, slow pace. The Lars doesn’t taste bitter at all, it smokes cool and perfectly dry. Hence each time I cleaned the internals, I noticed the pipe cleaner came out almost white. The tobacco burns down easily and to the bottom of the heel. I took a walk, clenching on the pipe. Good balance, little weight at 46g for a bowl that is almost 5cm high, comfortable bit.

The first time I examined the Lars, I thought Heiner Nonnenbroich was a decent enough pipe maker. Afterwards, I was able to observe his motivation, his eagerness to learn and to progress, his respect for the customer. From now on, he is a very good pipe maker whose prices are more than attractive. Once he’ll have developped a style of his own, maybe he’ll become a great one.

Auch ich wurde durch die Mitteilung in der NG auf Heiner Nonnenbroich aufmerksam. Viele der auf der Website http://www.hn-pipes.de angebotenen Pfeifen gefielen mit gut. Meine Wahl fiel auf die „Tulip“ (Grade A). Die Bestellung und Lieferung erfolgte problemlos, zügig und im Rahmen eines angenehmen Kontaktes.

Nachdem die Pfeife kurz vor Weihnachten angekommen war wurde sie voller Neugier ausgepackt und untersucht :

Es wurde ein sehr schönes Holz verarbeitet (nur zwei minimalste Spots ohne Bedeutung). Die Verarbeitung des Kopfes ist, betreffend alle Kriterien, ausgezeichnet und ohne auch nur den geringsten Makel oder Beanstandung. Die Bohrung ist offensichtlich perfekt.

Meine ganz besondere Aufmerksamkeit richtet sich auf das Mundstück (Ebonit). Es ist bestens ausgearbeitet und mit einem angenehmen Biss ausgestattet. Kopf und Mundstück sind gut verschachtelt.

Nur fällt mir auf, dass das Mundstück etwas schwergängig ist. Nach einigem Zögern habe ich mit einer kleinen Rundfeile die Bohrung des Holmes ganz kurz nachgegangen. Jetzt ist auch diese Kleinigkeit behoben und absolut in Ordnung.

Auch ist zu bemerken, dass die Pfeife gut ausbalanciert und, was bei Filterpfeifen nicht selbstverständlich ist, wohlproportioniert. Sie ist in sich „sehr stimmig“.

Also insgesamt, vom „materiellen“ her volle Zufriedenheit.

Die Inbetriebnahme der Pfeife muss allerdings für einige Tage verschoben werden …. da sie unter dem Weihnachtsbaum soll !

Dann war es soweit. Inzwischen wurden vier Füllungen in Rauch aufgelöst.

Zu den Raucheigenschaften kann ich nur den Satz von Erwin Van Howe zitieren: „There’s only one way to describe the smoking properties: excellent !“.

Dem ist absolut so und kaum etwas hinzu zu fügen. Es wurde nicht nur schönes, sondern auch gutes Holz verarbeitet. Alle Kriterien sind erfüllt: die Pfeife raucht sich kühl, trocken, geschmacklich bestens und glimmt bis zum letzten Krümel langsam durch.

Zum Schluss noch etwas angenehmes: die geforderten Preise sind mehr als attraktiv.

Ich wünsche Heiner Nonnenbroich weiterhin viel Erfolg und eine positive Entwicklung… dies auch im Interesse der Pfeifenraucher !

Hallo daft,

auf Manfred Arenz' Vorstellung von Heiner Nonnenbroich hier in der NG wurde ich auf diesen Pfeifenmacher aufmerksam.

Auf seiner Seite hatte es mir die als "Spirit of Johst" benannte Pfeife auf Anhieb angetan, war sie doch das einzige oFi-Modell zu diesem Zeitpunkt.
Leider war sie schon verkauft - aber Heiner fertigte für mich eine zweite Version an, die mir sogar noch gelungener erscheint als das "Original".

Für das Shape passt meines Erachtens keine der üblichen Formbezeichnungen.
Aus einem buchstäblich bleistiftdünnen Holm entspringt fließend der recht große, eiförmige und nach vorn geneigte Kopf; die Maserung folgt dem Schwung perfekt (oder umgekehrt: die Form nimmt die Richtung der Maserung perfekt auf). Die Pfeife weist ein paar Sandkorn-Spots auf, die den Gesamteindruck jedoch nicht stören (zumindest nicht für mein Empfinden).
 
Oberflächenherstellung und -finish sind auf einem hohen Niveau; die Politur ist nicht bis auf Spiegelglanz ausgeführt, aber von sehr guter Qualität.
Heiner stellt sich auf den Standpunkt, dass diese sich ohnehin sehr schnell abgreife; Fixierung z. B. mit Schellack lehnt er ab, auch wenn dadurch ein höherer Glanz erreichbar wäre. Ich kann mit diesem Mattglanz-Finish gut leben.

Besonders glänzt Heiner allerdings bei der Mundstückarbeit. Das Mundstück ist aus bestem Stangen-Ebonit gefertigt, der Biss ist fein (3,8 mm) und sehr angenehm ausgeführt. Diese Hürde, die für viele Neulinge einen Stolperstein bedeutet, hat er bestens gemeistert.

Die Rauchqualität aus der unbehandelten Tabakkammer war, trotz der Neigung nach vorne, von der ersten Füllung an ausnehmend gut. Kühl, trocken, weitgehend unverfälschtes Tabakaroma, nur wenig Holznote, das waren meine Eindrücke.

Zu besonderer Form läuft Nonnenbroich auf, wenn ein Auftraggeber mit eigenen Vorstellungen an ihn herantritt, wie ich aus eigener Erfahrung berichten kann. Bleibt als Fazit, dass HN-Pipes zu den (noch?)
günstigen Preisen eine unbedingte Empfehlung wert sind.

Ciao Heiner                                                          ....Nein, vergessen habe ich Dich nicht (dazu war der Kontakt zu angenehm und die Pfeife zu toll!) . . . . . aber es hat gedauert bis ich wieder in der Lage war wirklich mit Genuss Pfeife zu rauchen. Nach für mich längerer Rauchabstinenz wollte ich auch nicht gerade mit so einer feinen und dazu noch neuen Pfeife, wie das die Cherry ist, mich wieder an den Rauch gwöhnen. In der Zwischenzeit ist meine Gesundheit wieder ok und die Cherry ist auch im Einsatz. Natürlich wollte ich ein paar Füllungen Rauchen um auch eine vernünftige Aussage machen zu können. Das ist nun nach 5 - 6 Füllungen auch der Fall.

Bei den Aeusserlichkeiten begonnen ist die Maserung wunderschön und Pfeifenform folgt perfekt dem Verlauf der Maserung. Die ganze Pfeife ist äusserst sauber verarbeitet und ganz toll ausbalanciert. Der fein gearbeitete Uebergang vom Pfeifenholm zum Mundstück überzeugt. Die Stärke des Bisses ist für mich gut. - Die Raucheigenschaften sind ebenso toll wie das Aeussere der Pfeife. Die Pfeife war von Beginn weg praktisch trocken zu rauchen und raucht sich fast von selbst. Kurz gesagt, ich möchte sie nicht mehr missen - ein tolles Stück.

Einzig das Fischschwanzende ist für mein Empfinden zu breit. Das Mundstück würde es, bei dem geringen Gewicht und in Verbindung mit der perfekten Balance der Pfeife, locker verkraften in der selben Breite zu enden wie der Uebergang Holm / Mundstück. Ich bin mir bewusst, das die Anforderungen an den Biss einer Pfeife sehr persönlich und daher recht individuell ausfallen können. Deswegen auch meine Formulierung ' für mein Empfinden'.

Heiner, ich gratuliere Dir zu dieser feinen Arbeit! Ich werde gerne ab und zu wieder auf deiner Homepage vorbeischauen.

superbly pleased. When it first arrived the stem was very tight, so I didnt
try to remove it. By today, it has adjusted to the local humidity and
removes flawlessly. I think your stemwork is superb. The bit is so thin
and comfortable, yet the draw is effortless. I will continue to watch your
website and when another shape catches my fancy and my pocketbook allows, I
will get another. Congrats for excellent work!

I first saw a Heiner Nonnenbroich pipe on Ebay. Michael Glukler at Briar Blues was selling it. Unfortunately I came up short and didn't win. Michael's website provided a link to Heiner's website, so I was able to contact the pipe maker and inquire about the possibility of having a pipe made that would be a variation of the pipe I had seen. Heiner was happy to do it. The next day I received an email from Heiner with a sketch of my pipe that was closer to what I wanted than what I had described (I think he read my mind). When I finally received my
pipe (Heiner was very kind and patient with my impatience and provided
emailed photos of the pipe as it progressed) I was thrilled. It is
beautiful! Exactly what I wanted...NO... better than what I wanted.
Originally I had asked for a blast with a dark almost black stain, but
Heiner emailed and said that the grain showed up so well (even though
it was sand blasted) that he felt it "would be a sin" to stain it so
dark and suggested a lighter stain. He was right. The pipe does have a
nice deep ring blast but also shows a nice straight grain running all
the way around the bowl- Beautiful. And the pipe smokes as good as it
looks. The stem work is excellent. Thin and comfortable just the way a
stem should be. I hope Heiner can read my mind again and come up with
another design that as good as this. I definitely want more
Nonnenbroich pipes.
